An evil faerie who wants to rule. A mystical golden dragon could be the key. One man must embrace his destiny to save the world…

Hooper never really believed in himself. The one thing he did believe was that dragons should stay as far away from him as possible. But when a dying emerald dragon gives him a magical gem, Hooper’s life is changed forever…

After discovering that he and his friends are the only ones who can keep an evil faerie from taking over the world, Hooper can’t help but be reluctant. After all, to save humanity he’ll need to protect Golden Wind, the most prized dragon of them all. As he fights his hatred of the creature, Hooper starts to question everything he’s ever learned…

Will Hooper forge his own destiny or will he succumb to the power of the dark, murderous faerie?

If a Dragon Cries is the first book in a fantasy coming of age series with dragons, swords, magic, and more. If you like insightful character journeys, Tolkienesque worlds, and majestic dragons, then you’ll love Gary Darby’s series starter.

The setting and world are really interesting. The author did a great job of building the world and easing you into it. The story also teaches life/moral lessons, which is always a plus.

Unfortunately, the characters and story is where I had to struggle through the book. It would have been completely tolerable if not for the *minor spoilers* fact that the main drives of the plot was the MC's absolute devotion of Cara (because she's pretty?) and the use of the word "somehow" to wave away complications in plot development. If these two things were fixed this could be a 5 star review; On the other hand, if not for the MC's obsession over Cara and "somehow"s I'm not sure how the author would get the group from place to place.

Also, a minor thing, but didthey ever get to eat food? I recall several times where their hunger was noted, but everytime they went hunting they didn't catch anything and had to run away to the next place.

Author has potential, and I would say the book is worth the price. If you have spare time and want to read a YA fantasy book.

If A Dragon Cries The Legend of Hooper Dragons Book 1 eBook Gary Darby Reviews

As a fan of fantasy, I really enjoyed this fresher take on the "unlikely hero" protagonist. This was well-written, and although there were some predictable components to the plot, the writing kept me engaged. Great read!
Lots of twist and turns with thankfully no bad language. Good read and the hero comes through. Movie rating pg.
This is a great story. It is well written. It is an epic fantasy and I can't wait to read the rest of the series. The main character deals with much self doubt and challenges. If you like dragons and adventure read this book.
I have been reading science fiction for over 60 years. I have not been this excited about a series in a very long time. I look forward to continuing this series. Great story, wonderful characters, believable world, fantastic writing.
Great book but very dark in the first third of the story. You start to wonder if Hooper will ever get an even break or that the world is just going to come to an end and kill him after all. But stay with it and read the whole thing and you will be surprised and elated.
I really enjoyed this book. Hooper and Scamper are my favorites. I hated how Hooper was treated in this book and I guess that if you are treated like less than dirt for your whole waking life, no matter what good you do, you will still believe that you are worthless.

I disliked some of the supporting characters because even though Hooper was right in front of them, they had no qualms about insulting and belittling him. I did not like that Hooper was enamored with Cara and I am hoping against hope that the author does no go the route of so many other books where the underdog gets the high and mighty girl because in my eyes, Cara is not worth his groverling, she was right there belittling him with no thought of how it made him feel.

Other than that I love the world building and character growth with Hooper.

Looking forward to book two.
"I start to reply but she shoves her muzzle so close that I’m staring up into her glistening nostrils. Please don’t sneeze, I think."

3.5 stars. Once Hooper emerges from his morose, self-absorbed earlier being, he's a good "everyman" and is, I'm sure, a welcome source of levity for his companions on their perilous journey. Or at least he should be, but they don't seem to appreciate his comments (life-and-death situations tend to damper one's sense of humor, I've found). Though I'm not the intended audience (prophecies make my eyes glaze over, even in Harry Potter, and I don't often stray towards quest books), I found the book full of gripping action in a world worth developing--good for young and old readers alike.
